William and Sarah Mudford's Children

William and Sarah had 8 children, all of whom survived to adulthood. These children were, in birth order: Winifred Violet Mary (Mudford) Leonard (b. 21 Jun. 1885), Sarah Josephine May (Mudford) O'Neill (b. 30 May 1887), William John Harold Mudford (b. 16 Jan. 1889), Aileen Elizabeth Gladys (Mudford) McMillan (b. 30 Dec. 1890), Richard Alfred Mudford (b. 24 Mar. 1893), Robert James Patrick Mudford (b. 12 Nov. 1897), William Henry Mudford (b. 24 Apr. 1899) and Jessie Laurimer Cornwall (Mudford) Patch (b. 6 Jun. 1901).

Winifred Violet Mary (Mudford) Leonard (b. 1885, d. 1951)

Winnie Mudford was born the 21'st June 1885, died on 28'th April 1951 and is buried at Hamilton East Cemetery.

She married Bob Leonard (b. 1882, d. 1948) on the 1'st September 1909. Winnie and Bob had two children: Eileen Phyllis (Leonard) Playle (b. 1910, d. 1981), and Henry Douglas Leonard (b. 1919, d. 1999). Based on electoral rolls they were living in Auckland on Dominion Rd. in 1911 and at 10 Earl st. in Parnell in 1925.

Sarah Josephine May (Mudford) O'Neill (b. 1887, d. 1982)

May Mudford was born the 30'th May 1887, died on 13'th June 1982 and is buried at Waikaraka Cemetery.

She married Frederick O'Neill (b. 1880, d. 1956) on the 31'st July 1912. May and Frederick had three children: Esther Homer (O'Neill) Hamilton (b. 1913, d. 2012), Alfred John O'Neill (b. 1919, d. 1996), and William Frederick O'Neill (b. 1923, d. 2010). Based on electoral rolls they were living in Auckland at 31 Cheshire St. in Parnell in 1925.

William John Harold Mudford (b. 1889, d. 1947)

Jack Mudford was born the 16'th January 1889, died on 26'th December 1947 and his ashes are scattered at Waikumete Cemetery and Crematorium.

He married Ruth Munce (b. 1900, d. 1975) on the 17'th March 1920. Jack and Ruth had two children: Norman Francis Mudford (b. 1920, d. 2006), and William John Mudford (b. 1923, d. 2008). Based on electoral roll information he was living in Auckland at Cheshire St. in 1911, 28 Henley St. in 1922, 19 Cracroft St. Parnell in 1925, and 8 Cracroft St. in 1928. At the time of his death he was living at 10 Cracroft St. His occupation was variously listed as Mill Hand, Sailmaker and labourer.

Their son William (Jack) was a leading jockey in the 1940's and 1950's with over 500 career wins. After retiring as a jockey he was a race starter at a number of race tracks around the North Island. He finished his career as a starter at Ellerslie Race Course in Auckland.

Aileen Elizabeth Gladys (Mudford) McMillan (b. 1890, d. 1979)

Eileen Mudford was born the 30'th December 1890, died on 7'th August 1979 and her ashes are interred at Fawkner Memorial Park, Fawkner, City of Merri-bek, Victoria, Australia.

She married William McMillan (b. 1882, d. ?) on the 28'th September 1914. William had been married previously and was widower with two children. Eileen and William likely had two children in New South Wales: William H (b. 1919) and Donald A (b. 1924). At this time I've been unable to find any further information about Eileen or her family. I remember meeting her once in the early 1970's when she was over from Australia to visit her sister Jessie.

Jim Mudford was born the 12'th November 1897, died on 26'th September 1949 and his ashes are scattered at Waikumete Cemetery and Crematorium.

He married Gladys Thomson (b. 1894, d. 1974) on the 24'th December 1919. Jim and Gladys were first cousins as Gladys was the daughter of Henry Thomson and Elizabeth Mudford. Jim and Gladys had at least three children: Robert Mudford (b. 1915, d. 1975), Henry William Mudford (b. 1921, d. 1996) and Joyce Mudford (b. 1925, d. 1993). From electoral rolls we know that Jim was a watersider and resided in Cracroft St in Parnell for most of his life. In 1928 he was living at 19 Cracroft Street, and in 1949 he was living at 12 Cracroft Street.

William Henry Mudford (b. 1899, d. 1956)

Bill Mudford was born the 24'th April 1899, died on 6'th May 1956 and his ashes are interred at Waikumete Cemetery and Crematorium.

He married Georgina Kendle (b. 1907, d. 1992) on the 7'th December 1925. Bill and Georgina had at three children: Naomi Mudford (b. 1926), William Henry Mudford (b. 1929, d. 2002) and Maureen Esmee Mudford (b. 1933, d. 2020). From electoral rolls we know that Bill was a commission agent and resided at 27 Home Street, Grey Lynn between 1949 and 1956.

Their son William was a leading NZ roller skating champion who competed internationally with his future wife Adrienne Creber (b. 1935, d. 2007) in pairs figure skating. In 1956 they placed third in the world championships for pairs figure skating in Richmond, Virginia.

Jessie Laurimer Cornwall (Mudford) Patch (b. 1901, d. 1990)

Jessie Mudford was born the 6'th June 1901, died on 6'th December 1990 and isburied in Waikaraka Cemetery, Auckland, New Zealand.

She married Les Patch (b. 19093, d. 1975) on the 13'th September 1941. Jessie had know Les for a long time before they married, but she had stayed at home to look after her mother, so they had not married until after Sarah died. They did not have any children. I met Jessie a number of times and have fond memories of her. One of her favourite conversation pieces was her gall bladder opreration, and she would proudly show off a jar containing her gall stones.
